For the coming two years, Franziska Aemisegger will be a MERGE guest researcher with a Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship (SNSF). In her current research she is studying land-atmosphere interactions in the midlatitude water cycle from a weather systems perspective. The different tools that Franziska uses are 1) stable water isotopes as naturally available tracers in the water cycle to obtain detailed insights into land surface exchange fuxes; and 2) a regional climate model with coupled vegetation dynamics to assess the importance of changes in vegetation properties for the extratropical transport systems of water vapour.
Background
Franziska did her PhD in the atmospheric dynamics group of Prof. Heini Wernli at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich in Switzerland on atmospheric stable water isotope measurements at the timescale of extratropical weather systems. She used a cavity ringdown laser spectrometer (Picarro) to perform both ground-based and airborne measurements of stable water isotopes in atmospheric water vapour.
